Data Drives Road Safety Agenda at APRSO Annual Meeting
On 21st & 22nd April this year ADB will be hosting the first annual meeting of the Asia Pacific Road Safety Observatory. The invite-only virtual event will discuss and seek agreement from 20 APRSO member countries on proposed minimum road safety performance indicators and agree steps towards establishing the APRSO road safety database
Every single day over 2,000 people die on roads across Asia and the Pacific. In fact, road crashes kill more people in the region than TB, AIDS and malaria combined, and are on the rise as countries become more urbanised. The Observatory and its 20 country members and partners are committed to reducing this number but to do so require access to more accurate road safety data, therefore the main objectives of the meeting are to:
- Share experiences on road safety indicators, and approaches to data collection and management
- Review the report on road safety indicators and agree minimum road safety indicators for APRSO
- Discuss and agree a plan and approach for collating data and establishing the APRSO road safety database
- Discuss and establish the role of APRSO National Data Coordinator
- Launch APRSO road safety capacity building program
The meeting will be attended by APRSO representatives, member countries and other member country stakeholders with responsibilities for collecting, analyzing and managing road safety data;
APRSO Partners and consultants including ADB, UNESCAP, FIA, ITF, WB and WHO;
Selected participants from non-member countries in the region and other key road safety stakeholders.
"For this first major gathering of APRSO's current members, we aim to hear from as many members as we can on the road safety indicators that are important to them, and how they are going about with their monitoring," said Michael Anyala, Senior Road Asset Management Specialist at ADB and part of the APRSO Secretariat, “This is will help to establish a regional road safety database for supporting evidence-based road safety policies and interventions.”
